Description

This report investigates extreme flood events which have been experienced in the past and makes conclusions as to the cause. It investigates the Brazeau and Bighorn Dams and their effects on peak flows through the City for selected flood events. Lastly the report investigates the available data and establishes the frequency of various flood magnitudes.

Description

A subsurface investigation at a reclaimed sanitary landfill in Edmonton (Beverly) has revealed that combustible gases entering a golf course structure are generated from decomposing garbage in the old landfill. Gases containing methane up to a maximum of 83% by volume are present in the subsurface adjacent to the structure. A ventilation system beneath the building maintains the methane concentration at less than 50% of the lower explosive limit (2.5 volume percent). The atmosphere beneath the structure is monitored continuously for combustible gases; an automatic alarm system will be activated should methane concentration exceed 50% of the explosive rate. Based on the results of this investigation, it is apparent that a large reservoir of combustible gas is present within the reclaimed landfill site. It is probable that the methane monitoring/warning system, and the ventilation system must remain operative for a period in the order of 50 years or more.

In August of 1974, Alberta Environment conducted groundwater exploration at Peerless Lake Settlement in order to develop potable groundwater sources for the area residents. Ten bored wells were constructed, each of which produces adequate quantities of groundwater for domestic needs. Water quality s acceptable, although iron concentrations somewhat exceed recommended limits. High static levels are present at several wells. These wells may be prone to freezing in winter and may require insulation to maintain year-round operation.

Description

Subdivision of the area surrounding the Hamlet of Anzac is in the preliminary phase of planning. The Soils Branch was requested by the Land Tenure Secretariat of the Department of Municipal Affairs to test soils in order to help plan the subdivision for residential use. The work involved test drilling for watertable and percolation tests. Forty holes were drilled with a truck mounted auger. The soil near the surface is either sandy or silty clay till. Most of the area has a high water table. The area has limitations for basement construction and normal sewage disposal septic fields.

Comprised of seven citizens from Canmore and the immediate area, the Committee was formed with two purposes in mind, first, and foremost, to provide a liason between the Canmore community and the Department of Environment. In doing so, it would identify for the Department the concerns and suggestions of the public about the river and the proposed flood control works and, in turn, inform the public of the steps the Department recommends be taken.

The intent of the course is to certify personnel of Alberta Department of Environment including other government departments that commonly perform regulatory and enforcement functions.

Physical and chemical analysis of spent sand indicate that this material is very infertile. The spent sand samples analysed had an average pH of 7.2 and low Na content indicating that there was no residual problem resulting from the NaOH used in the oil production process. Freshly processed sand however does have a high pH and higher Na contents.

Description

At the request of the Hon. D. J. Russell, Minister of Alberta Environment, a Committee of provincial and federal government as well as general public representatives was established to review the current use of warning signs in respect to water resources structures in the Province to recommend changes as required. The committee conducted a review of current legislation and procedures relating to the use of warning signs and the kinds of signs in use. IT found that there is a need for warning signs and for providing additional safeguards against personal hazards resulting from water resources and structures constructed in Alberta Waters. The Committee recommends that the guidelines as outlined in Appendix A be adopted as an initial set of guidelines. After implementation these guidelines can be improved and expanded as required.
