Description
Salvage excavations were undertaken in 1974 at two sites, one prehistoric and one historic, in the Coal Creek – Grand Valley area west of Cochrane. These sites were to be impacted to varying degrees by the planned revisions of Highway 1a and Grand Valley Road. The prehistoric site was a multiple component tipi ring site, containing a minimum of three occupations. The historic site was a coal mining site operational between 1887 and 1890. The site studies detailed in this report were undertaken to map and selectively excavate sufficient areas of the two sites so that the spatial, temporal and cultural relationships of both sites could be determined.
