Description

There are numerous and important examples of the province’s biodiversity contained within Alberta’s protected areas (e.g., parks, wilderness areas, ecological reserves). Much of that biodiversity remains to be discovered, particularly that which relates to the invertebrate fauna. Spiders are in that category. In Canada there are approximately 1400 known spider species. The Biological Survey of Canada estimates that there are at most 1,500 spider species in the country. Holmberg and Buckle (2002) noted that there were 662 species in 23 families for Alberta and Saskatchewan combined. Within Alberta there are about 583 known spider species belonging to 24 families. That number will continue to grow as more information and data becomes available. The spider specimens that were collected in Caribou Mountains Wildland Provincial Park during this survey were the first for this rather remote area.

Description

The principal goal of the work outlined in this report was to generate an avifaunal inventory for a newly designated protected area, viz. Colin-Cornwall Lakes (CCL) Wildland Provincial Park, located in northeasternmost Alberta (Figure 1). Established in March 1998, the Park encompasses a 704 km² area within the central-eastern portion of the Kazan Upland Sub-Region, of the province’s Canadian Shield Natural Region.

Description

The Bow Valley protected areas are public lands designated under the Provincial Parks Act to be maintained in a natural state for use by the public for recreation, education or other specified purposes. They include Bow Valley Wildland Park, Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park and Bow Valley Provincial Park. The Bow Valley protected areas were designated or expanded by Order in Council under the province’s Special Places program in 1998. The designations reflected the consensus of a volunteer Local Committee that included conservation groups, industry, recreationists and local governments. From 1998 to September 2000, the Bow Valley protected areas covered an area of 75,408 acres (30,517 hectares) of provincial Crown land in the Bow River watershed. In September 2000, a further 20, 474 acres (8289 hectares) in the Spray Valley was added to the Bow Valley Wildland Park. This park straddles the Central Mixedwood and Athabasca Plain Natural Subregions transitional area. The terrain in the park is defined by the crag and tail topography created through the actions of glacial ice and meltwater. Crags refer to the knobs or areas of exposed bedrock located on the up-ice side of the landform, while the tails are the trailing elongate bodies on the lee side of the landform and generally consist of erodible bedrock (American Geological Institute 1984 in Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre 1998). The bedrock patches in this area are generally quite small; however they are very distinct, and do provide defining character for the park landscape This park is located in a relatively remote region of the province and little documented information is currently available for this area. In Alberta, the Canadian Shield Ecoregion is restricted to the extreme northeast part of the province (Strong and Leggat 1992). It is subdivided into the Kazan Upland Subregion and the Athabasca Plain Subregion, located to the north and south of Lake Athabasca, respectively. There are several wildland parks that have recently been established in these two subregions. An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. This survey was the first for these three parks. Two parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were the focus for an odonate survey in the summer of 2001, namely La Butte Creek and Fildler-Greywillow Wildland Parks. Field surveys of the mammal fauna of Marguerite River Crag and Tail, Maybelle River and Richardson River Dunes Wildland Provincial Parks and surrounding area were conducted from June 12 - 24 and from August 22 - 25, 2000. A literature search suggested that 44 mammalian species could be expected to inhabit the three wildland provincial parks. Small mammal trapping, direct observations, tracks, animal calls or other sounds, structures and scats of mammal species yielded 29 species. Fur trapping records show five additional species in the study area. The additional ten expected species were not detected during the field survey. The observation of one grizzly bear in the Marguerite Crag and Tail Wildland Provincial Park was definitely the highlight of mammalian observations during the field survey in this area.
