Description

Kakwa Wildland Park is located at the northern edge of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, about 114 km southwest of Grande Prairie. The purpose of this survey was to provide an annotated summary of the odonate species that occur in the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioural information. This information will contribute towards an increased understanding of the odonate fauna of the park and, in a broader context, of Alberta.

Description

The Holmes Crossing Sandhills Ecological Reserve (ER) is 8 km southwest and the Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park (WPP) is 9 km east of Fort Assiniboine; both are located within the Central Mixedwood Subregion. Holmes Crossing Sandhills ER occupies 1982 hectares and Fort Assiniboine WPP occupies 7903 ha. The latter area was the focus of a Lepidoptera survey in 2005. Both areas contain a number of vegetated transverse sand dunes dominated by stands of jack pine. Other habitats include aspen forest, dry meadows, fens, marshes, bogs and a series of riparian balsam poplar and alder forests. The purpose of this survey was to provide an annotated summary of the Lepidoptera species that occur in these areas, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. Description

The Birch Mountains to the northwest of Ft. McMurray are located within the Upper and Lower Boreal Highlands Subregions . A sizeable protected area, the Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park (WPP), is located primarily within the bounds of the Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion. The WPP contains extensive bogs, patches of pine, aspen and birch forest as well as riparian meadow habitats. The park occupies an area of 144,505 ha and was the focus of a lepidoptera survey in 2004. The Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion is characterized by steeply sloping dissected plateaus and undulating and hummocky upper plateau surfaces. In addition to the Birch Mountains, the Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion includes the upper slopes and plateaus of the Buffalo Head, Naylor and Clear Hills. This Subregion is entirely surrounded by the Lower Boreal Highlands Subregion.

Description

An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung 2001) in the Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes Wildland Parks. The latter two parks are located in the Central Mixedwood Subregion. Maybelle River WP is located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion. In the summers of 2001 and 2002, three wildland parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were surveyed. These were La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow in 2001 and Colin-Cornwall Lakes in 2002 (Macaulay 2002, Macaulay 2003). Most recently, two wildland parks within the Subarctic Subregion were surveyed; the Caribou Mountains in 2003 and Birch Mountains in 2004. These surveys were the first for all of these parks.

The primary goal of this survey was to determine the presence of sub-arctic Lepidoptera fauna, and baseline information on distribution patterns and abundance. Due to the unique ecological characteristics of this region, and almost complete lack of prior knowledge of the Lepidoptera fauna, the survey of the Caribou Mountain Lepidoptera yielded a number of discoveries important to the knowledge of the provincial fauna.

A Lepidoptera survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Schmidt and Pohl 2000) in the Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes Wildland Parks, which are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion. In the summer of 2001, two wildland parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were surveyed (Macaulay and Pohl 2002), namely La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow. These surveys were the first for all of these parks.

Description

Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve (see map) is located to the southeast of Wainwright in parts of townships 41 and 42, and range 5. It is about 28 km2 in size. This area has intrigued me since I was last there with Gary Anweiler on July 13 and 14, 2002. The habitat here consists of stabilized dunes that contain a mixture of aspen groves, prairie and open sand with sedges. I was able to return to this area in 2004 on June 8th, and July 2nd and 3rd. Sherri Dunne and I accessed the ecological reserve from the south side; the same as in 2002, and camped near the reserve entrance. All specimens were taken at and around 52.5960N, -110.6088W (the red dot on the map). The following list of 132 species updates the 88 of the previous list from June of 2002. Specimens were collected under Research and Collection Permit No. RC04EC003.

An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung 2001) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. The 2000 survey was the first for these three parks. The next survey was conducted in the summer of 2001 (Macaulay 2002) within two of the wildland parks that are located in the Kazan Upland Subregion, namely La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow.

The Subregion where this wildland park is located contains numerous muskeg ponds, streams and lake habitats. The purpose of the survey was to provide an annotated summary of some of the odonate species that occur in the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. The information obtained contributes towards an increased understanding of the odonate fauna found within this wildland park but also within the broader context of Alberta.

In Alberta, the Canadian Shield Ecoregion is restricted to the extreme northeast part of the province (Strong and Leggat 1992). It is subdivided into the Kazan Upland Subregion and the Athabasca Plain Subregion, located to the north and south of Lake Athabasca, respectively. There are several wildland parks that have recently been established in these two subregions. An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. This survey was the first for these three parks. Two parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were the focus for an odonate survey in the summer of 2001, namely La Butte Creek and Fildler-Greywillow Wildland Parks.
