Description

This publication presents the responses of Children's Services to recommendations made in mandatory reviews of child deaths undertaken by the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate. The Advocate is mandated to report on the death of young persons who had been identified as a child in need of intervention at the time of their death, or within two years of their death. These mandatory reviews are compiled and released twice a year (March and September).

This resource provides the government response to two recommendations directed towards several ministries by the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) in its report Strengthening Foundations: Assessment, Information-Sharing and Collaboration – An Investigative Review. The purpose of the OCYA's review was to identify whether services and supports were appropriate, provide public assurance and identify systemic issues that might have been present.

Under the Early Learning and Child Care Act, anyone providing child care for more than six children in addition to their own requires a child care licence issued by the Government of Alberta. The information contained in this document is not intended as legal or professional advice; unlicensed child care providers are solely responsible for ensuring that all applicable laws and standards are followed.

Building Strength, Inspiring Hope: A Provincial Action Plan for Youth Suicide Prevention 2019 – 2024 was released in March 2019. One of the actions the Government of Alberta committed to was to support the co-creation of First Nations and Métis youth suicide prevention graphic novels to provide an awareness resource that is reflective of the experiences of Indigenous youth. Children’s Services partnered with Indigenous Story Studio to create two graphic novels related to suicide prevention and mental health promotion; one reflects a First Nations story and the other a Métis story, both with a focus on wellness. The graphic novels were created through engagement with Indigenous youth across Alberta.
