Description

Plants are the primary producers on rangeland. Range plants cluster in communities. Effective range management requires that plant communities, vegetation types, pastures, and finally ranches, be operated as range ecosystems. A range ecosystem is a complex of living and non-living (biotic and abiotic) factors of an environment where everything is connected to everything else. It functions as a unit and anything that affects one part of the unit, such as by grazing, affects the whole complex.

Severe infestations can occur throughout most of this area, but are usually (but not always) limited to the Parkland area of the Prairies and the Peace River region of British Columbia and Alberta. Description

The cabbage seedpod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus) was introduced to North America from Europe about 70 years ago. The weevil was discovered in British Columbia in 1931, and from there, it dispersed south and eastward, so it now occurs throughout most of the United States. It was first found infesting canola in southern Alberta in 1995, and since then, the weevil has spread to central Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. In 2000, it was found in Québec for the first time.

SWSW and CPS wheat are attractive crops for biofuel production due to the higher grain yield potential, weed competitiveness and starch content. From 2009 to 2012, field plot studies were conducted at five different soil zone/agro-ecological locations (Dark Brown, Thin Black – south, Thin Black – central, Black and Gray soil zones) in Alberta, with a focus on the Parkland Region. The study showed that SWSW and CPS wheat types can be grown successfully under dryland conditions in southern and central Alberta.

This publication presents a summary of custom work and rental rates. These rates are only intended as a guide. The specific objective of this survey summary is to organize and report custom rates for certain custom operations on the farm. No effort is made to evaluate the fairness of reported rates. The goal is to report what is being charged, not what should be charged. Farmers may find custom rates useful as a guide for machinery management, budgeting and financial planning for credit needs. Also, custom rates can be used as a guide in negotiating settlements for work performed for neighbors or others. Lenders, educators, government institutions and others doing budgeting or planning analysis may also find custom rates helpful in their work. Mortalities happen. Under Alberta’s Destruction and Disposal of Dead Animals Regulation of the Animal Health Act, Appendix A, the owner of a dead animal shall dispose of the animal within 48 hours of its death. Mortalities can be composted, incinerated, buried, rendered or naturally disposed. Today, animal agriculture is challenged to discover innovative ways to dispose of livestock and poultry mortalities. Composting of livestock mortalities is one option. There are two general approaches to livestock mortality composting: bin systems and windrow systems.
