Description

Dissolved gases in well water are a common occurrence in Alberta. The major gases found in wells are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide. Information on hydrogen sulfide, a gas with a rotten egg odour, is discussed in Agrifacts 716 (D14) Removing Hydrogen Sulphide from Water, so hydrogen sulfide will not be discussed in this publication. Common problems with methane and carbon dioxide are “spurting” taps and priming problems (gas locking) in pumps. The gas problem varies in severity – from occasional “spurting” from the hot water taps to a constant flow of gas from the well casing.

Methane is a colourless, odourless gas and is lighter than air. Methane is not considered toxic, but it is an asphyxiant at a concentration of over 50 per cent in air. Methane is extremely flammable and can be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Methane is explosive at volumes of 5 per cent to 15 per cent (50,000 ppm to 150,000 ppm) in air. Although methane will rise, it can displace oxygen in confined spaces such as cisterns, pumphouses or well pits.

Shallow well jet pumps are practical for wells or reservoirs that require a total pumping lift of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Industry Highlights. The three main components of the shallow well jet pump are an electric motor, an impeller and a jet assembly. Although a simple centrifugal pump would pump water at this lift, including a jet assembly will greatly increase the discharge pressure and suction. This combination makes the shallow well jet pump suitable for use in farm water pressure systems.
