The Agricultural Operation Practices Act includes regulations for spreading manure or compost for all livestock operations in Alberta. The manure spreading regulations include requirements for manure incorporation, soil nitrogen and salinity limits, setback distances, record keeping and soil testing. This fact sheet serves as a quick reference of the manure-spreading requirements and can be printed and laminated for use in the field.

Description

The Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) is provincial legislation which sets manure management standards for all operations that handle manure. The Act defines siting and construction standards for manure storages and collection facilities and sets out regulations governing the management of manure. Through the application process, directly affected neighbours and municipalities have an opportunity to address environmental concerns. As well, through the complaint process, neighbours can address environmental and nuisance concerns regarding an agricultural operation. Description

The Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) and regulations include manure management requirements for all livestock operations in Alberta. Producers using seasonal feeding and bedding sites (wintering sites), where livestock are fed and sheltered over the winter, must follow these regulations. Livestock corrals must also be managed according to the same requirements. Under AOPA, all livestock producers are expected to follow the setbacks required from common bodies of water when locating wintering sites and livestock corrals. This practice will help minimize the risk of contaminated runoff potentially affecting the water quality of common water bodies.
