Description

The details of where, when and how trees on Crown land in Alberta are harvested and managed for sustainability are contained in forest management plans approved by the Government of Alberta, with input from the public and other stakeholders. Forest management plans prepared by industry are a requirement of Forest Management Agreements (FMA) negotiated between the Government of Alberta and forest companies. Forest management plans provide direction for sustainable management of forest resources. FMA 9100029 is allocated to Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. and consists of 11 forest management units (FMU) A16, L1, L2, L3, L8, L11, S11, S14, S18, S22, and S23. The FMA area is located in northeastern Alberta and falls predominately within Central Mixedwood, Upper and Lower Boreal Highlands, and Athabasca Plain natural sub-regions.

The details of where, when and how trees on Crown land in Alberta are harvested and managed for sustainability are contained in forest management plans approved by the Government of Alberta, with input from the public and other stakeholders. The FMA area is located in northwestern Alberta; it falls predominately within Central Mixedwood, Lower Boreal Highlands, and Northern Mixedwood natural sub-regions. The FMA area is located within the Lower Peace Land-use Framework planning region.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0600043, allocated to Tolko Industries Ltd., Vanderwell Contractors (1971) Ltd., and West Fraser Mills Ltd. via legislative Order-in-Council (O.C. 550/2005) dated November 30, 2005. The FMP encompasses Forest Management Unit S17, which is located within the Upper Athabasca and Lower Peace Land-use Framework planning regions in central Alberta; it falls within the Central Mixedwood and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.

(formally known as Gordon Buchanan Enterprises Ltd. and Tolko Industries Ltd.). The FMP includes the FMA and non-FMA portions of Forest Management Unit S21, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area. The DFA is located within the Upper Peace, Lower Peace and Upper Athabasca Land-Use Framework planning regions in north central Alberta; it falls within the Dry Mixedwood, Central Mixedwood, Upper Foothills and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.
