Description

This paper describes the findings of an ongoing research project investigating the most critical aspects that can improve productivity in the delivery of oil and gas construction projects of Alberta. Industry recommendations for improving construction productivity are categorized and tabulated into 10 major areas: labour management, project frontend planning and workface planning, management of construction and support, constructability in engineering design, engineering management, communication, contractual strategy and contractor selection, government influence and modularization, prefabrication, prebuild in shops.

Description

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the substances formed during incomplete combustion of organic fuels. In Alberta, oil and gas flares are a source of PAHs, which may lead to the exposure of surrounding vegetation. Two methods can be used to determine exposure: ambient air quality monitoring near the vegetation in the vicinity of a flare, or the vegetation itself. This project was designed to investigate the use of biomonitoring methods to measure the exposure of vegetation to the emissions from sour gas flares.

Description

The primary purpose of this project was to determine the extent to which two fly ashes readily available in Alberta affect the properties of concrete considered for use in bridge works, and accordingly to establish the conditions under which fly ash can safely be specified in such bridge works. The results confirm many potential advantages of using fly ash in air-entrained concrete, including reduced heat of hydration, the option to increase specified strength or reduce the unit volume cost, or some combination of both, particularly in massive bridge components, along with the prospect of satisfactory freeze-thaw durability under moist salt­-free exposure conditions, increased resistance to chloride ion penetration, and reduced shrinkage potential. Most of these benefits are realized more fully using a superplasticizing admixture instead of a conventional water-reducing admixture.
