Description

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 9700033. The FMP includes the Forest Management Agreement and non-FMA portion of FMU S19, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area (DFA). The DFA is located in north central Alberta within the Upper Athabasca, Upper Peace and Lower Peace Land-Use Framework planning regions. The DFA falls within the Central Mixedwood and Dry Mixedwood natural subregions.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 6900016, allocated to Weyerhaeuser Company Limited (Grande Prairie) through legislative Order-in-Council (O.C. 503/2007) dated November 14, 2007. The FMP includes the FMA and non-FMA portion of Forest Management Unit (FMU) G16, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area (DFA). The DFA is located entirely within the Upper Peace Land-use Framework planning region in west central Alberta; it falls within the Alpine, Subalpine, Montane, Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills, Dry Mixedwood and Central Mixedwood Natural Subregions.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic, and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and stakeholders. The forest management area covered in this plan is FMA 8800025, allocated to West Fraser Mills Ltd. (Hinton), through legislative Order-in-Council (O.C. 565/2007) dated January 14, 2008. The FMA area is located in west central Alberta and falls within Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills, Sub-Alpine and Montane natural sub-regions. The HWP FMA area is located within the Upper Athabasca Land-Use Framework planning region. This plan amends the 1999 Forest Management Plan and was prepared in response to the Government of Alberta's directive to reduce the amount of mountain pine beetle susceptible stands within the Hinton FMA.

Growth and Yield Projection System (GYPSY) is a forest growth model composed of a number of sub-models or functions. GYPSY is used to forecast the growth and yield of stands of trees on a per hectare basis. The 2009 version has been updated to include modelling capability for multiple species in pure and mixed species stands. It also enables forest managers to predict future growth based on reforestation survey results.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area (FMA) under consideration is Blue Ridge Lumber Inc. FMA 7500020 is located in the west central part of the province, and spans portions of three natural sub-regions including the Central Mixedwood, the Upper Foothills and the Lower Foothills. The Landscape Assessment component of the Detailed FMP describes the planning area in greater detail.

Large amounts of organic carbon are present in Alberta rangelands. One hectare of rangeland contains 50-200 tonnes of carbon in soil organic matter, 2-10 tonnes carbon in plant biomass and 1-2 tonnes carbon in litter. Total organic carbon levels in rangeland soils are considerably greater than the amount of carbon present in the atmosphere above these soils or exchanged with the atmosphere each year. Total organic carbon in the 7 million hectares of native pasture in Alberta is equivalent to about three times the current annual emissions of all greenhouse gases in Canada.
