This report examines recent studies on trends and changes in extreme weather events in Canada and assesses these studies in the context of global warming. The assessment suggests that extreme weather events (hot spells, extreme precipitation events, thunderstorm/tornadoes and ice storms) do not show an increasing trend anywhere in Canada, or over the Canadian prairies at this point in time. On the Canadian prairies, extreme cold spells and winter blizzards are definitely on the decline during the past 40 years.

The purpose of this study was to examine the spatial and temporal variability of temperature over the province of Alberta based on observed records, and to compare the results with climate model outputs. The emphasis is on temperature trends to allow for a detailed analysis of both annual and monthly data. The results from this study are useful to the understanding of the nature and extent of temperature variability within the province. They are also useful in developing strategies for climate change adaptation for Alberta.

Description

This statistical study assesses the change of Alberta climate using the monthly data of surface air maximum temperature, surface air minimum temperature, total precipitation, total rainfall, and total snowfall from 1884 to 1996 from 38 long-term climate stations. The weighted average of individual station values was used to obtain an Alberta average of climate variables for each month. The purpose of the study was to examine the trends of climate variables over the province and apply an averaging method that would provide a better representation of Alberta's climatic trends.
