Description

In Alberta, the loggerhead shrike is considered to be a Species of Special Concern. Since 1987, a prairie-wide roadside survey has been conducted every five years to monitor populations. This report summarizes results of the 2019 survey conducted in Alberta, and compares results with surveys conducted in 1987, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013.

The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is arguably Alberta’s most “at risk” species. Monitoring of sage-grouse in Alberta has been sporadic since it began in 1968. However, since the species decline was documented in the mid-1990s a concerted effort has been made to monitor the population each spring. This report summarizes results of the lek counts conducted in 2023.

Description

The ferruginous hawk is a large raptor within the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta, inhabiting areas dominated by native prairie. It is currently listed as an Endangered species under Alberta’s Wildlife Act. The provincial ferruginous hawk population has been estimated every five years since 1982, except between the years 1993 and 1999. This report presents the findings of the 2022 survey.

Description

A survey for slender mouse-ear-cress, a federally listed species at risk, was conducted in southeastern Alberta during mid-June to early July 2008. Slender mouse-ear cress has been assessed as "data-deficient" in Alberta based on a 2004 status report. The survey was undertaken to partly address a recommendation that surveys be done during non-drought years to determine whether significant numbers of additional subpopulations exist in Alberta, and how limited the distribution of slender mouse-ear cress might actually be. Twenty sites were visited and 18 quarter sections were searched over 10 days in mid June to early July. Slender mouse-ear cress was found at six locations, of which two are previously reported and four are new.

This document describes a species-based survey protocol for the sampling of the northern leopard frog in Alberta. The protocol may be adapted for inventories of other amphibian species. Three sampling techniques for the leopard frog are described in the protocol and include a time-constrained visual encounter survey, a call (vocalization) survey and an egg mass count survey.

Description

Short-horned lizards occupy a number of relatively isolated, widely scattered localities within southeastern Alberta. Populations of these small, well-camouflaged lizards are generally of low density and overall abundance in the province, as the area represents the northernmost margin of the species’ range. The objectives of this year's survey were to search all historically recorded locations for the species in the province, to evaluate the probability of continued persistence, given the habitat currently available, and to determine the continued presence of the species by captures where possible. Over the course of the survey, 125 individual lizards were captured. Within those sites found to be occupied by lizards, the average density of captures was also calculated to be approximately two animals per hectare, although southern sites were more generally populous than northern sites.
