The ESAL history reports allow consultants undertaking pavement designs to evaluate the reasonableness of the present ESAL value. ESAL values in the history reports may fluctuate from year to year. Statistics are estimated from data collected for Alberta Transportation by its contractors and are given as weighted averages over entire highways, control sections and traffic control sections.

A working knowledge of this information is part of the requirement for a bulk milk grader licence in Alberta. A bulk mild grader is responsible for taking samples of a producer's raw milk for the purposes of monitoring food safety on behalf of the government and Alberta Milk. The samples are used for determining the raw milk’s quality, components, and obtaining data to determine the milk grade. Raw milk refers to milk that has not been pasteurized. The bulk milk grader is responsible for accepting or rejecting the raw milk at a dairy farm.
