Presents results of an aerial survey for moose conducted between February 22 and 25, 2023. The survey was conducted in Wildlife Management Unit 526, in northwestern Alberta. The survey objective was to update the moose and deer population estimates, sex ratios, and age class ratios, as well as obtain a total minimum count for elk in WMU 526.

Description

This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Northwest Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Hay-Zama and Etthithun Lake populations. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, all hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. There is a small area Parkland Natural Region that is located in the northwest corner of Alberta along the banks of the Peace River. During 2005 and 2006 I began surveying Lepidoptera in this area. The habitat targeted was the Peace River Parkland Subregion that consists of open grassland with aspen bluffs. The following is a list of 503 species representing 38 different families.

The purpose of this study was to assess the current distribution and abundance of eight disjunct butterfly populations that are closely associated with the native grasslands of the Peace River Parkland natural sub-region of northwestern Alberta and to make recommendations for further monitoring and management. All of the butterfly populations surveyed have very narrow geographic ranges and specific habitat requirements making them particularly susceptible to habitat loss.

Previous bat studies conducted in Alberta have been limited in geographical scope and no long-term, province-wide, standardized monitoring has ever been conducted. A standard protocol for surveying bats in Alberta was recently developed, with the goal of ensuring that all studies on bats in the province collect the same types of information in standard formats. The report presents the results of a study conducted with the dual purpose of surveying bats in central and northwestern Alberta, while also performing a field test of the newly developed protocols.

The Notikewin South study area is located in northwestern Alberta and comprises some 15,000 square kilometres of land bounded on the south and east by the Peace River, on the west by the Alberta-British Columbia border and on the north by the Notikewin River.
