The Alberta Research Council was contracted by Alberta Environment to supervise the drilling and installation of three new wells for the Groundwater Observation Well Network, which is a network of groundwater wells that monitor groundwater levels in aquifers across Alberta. This report details the site selection, drilling and well installation data for these monitoring wells.

This is the revised standard operating procedures for the field protocols to be used to collect gas, water and bacteria samples for baseline water well testing. The objective of baseline water well testing is to produce representative gas, water and bacteria samples of the water contributing zone or zones that a give well is screened across. The data collected will serve as a baseline for future testing if there is a concern of an impact on the water well by coal-bed methane activity.

Description

The Alberta Acid Deposition Management Framework stipulates that Alberta Environment is responsible for conducting an evaluation of the acid deposition monitoring data in the province, as well as conducting an evaluation of receptor sensitivity. The present study addresses the latter of these two requirements with respect to potentially acid sensitive soils in the Edmonton East Half map sheet. The objective of this receptor sensitivity study is to provide an estimate of the critical load for the soil types and water bodies in the Edmonton West study area. On the basis of these critical loads estimates, a recommendation regarding the sensitivity of the study area as a whole is provided.

Long considered by scientists and farmers around the world as an effective and environmentally friendly herbicide, recent studies have shown some persistence and mobility in the environment.

Semi-permanent wetlands in the Aspen Parkland eco-region are important habitat for migratory waterfowl and offer valuable habitat for pairing and brood rearing. A water quality study was conducted to establish pesticide baseline data for these wetlands. A second objective of this study was to evaluate, at a scoping level, the potential importance of atmospheric loading of pesticides to these wetlands. The literature documents the importance of overland runoff as a pathway of pesticide movement to surface waters, but increasing evidence also points to the importance of atmospheric deposition.

The objective of this report is to determine whether the ecological effects of treated bleached kraft pulp mill effluent on aquatic invertebrates vary with water temperature. To address this objective, we initially summarized existing studies that evaluated the interactive effects of water temperature on the toxicity of a variety of compounds to aquatic invertebrates. This review indicated that there is a moderately large amount of information indicating that toxic effects of contaminants or other physicochemical stressors can vary with water temperature. These interactive effects between contaminant concentrations and water temperature raise the issue of whether toxic effects of pulp mill effluents that are typically evaluated at 15oC to 20oC, are representative of those at lower temperatures. This is relevant to rivers receiving pulp mill effluent in Alberta, which have lowest dilution capacity in winter, when water temperatures are near 0oC for five months or more. Our review of...

This report presents a summary of the biological information gathered on fish populations in the upper Oldman River system during the initial five years (1991 to 1995) of operation of the Oldman River Reservoir. Populations of the major sport-fish species in the Oldman River Reservoir appear to have remained relatively abundant during the first five years of reservoir operation. Continued monitoring of fish populations in the Oldman River Reservoir is recommended because limnological and biological conditions within reservoirs commonly require longer than five years to stabilize.
