Description

To obtain timely data for the purpose of air quality assessment, air quality trend reporting, and to meet the requirements for inclusion of the data in provincial and national air quality databases, a continuous method of analyzing Non Methane Hydrocarbons (NMHC) concentrations in ambient air is used. This method is capable of measurement updates at a rate of once every five minutes or faster. Readings from instruments of this method enables the calculation of hourly averaged concentrations of Total Hydrocarbons THC, Methane CH4 and Non-methane Hydrocarbons NMHC. Commercially available NMHC analyzers are used in the method.

Description

To obtain timely data for the purpose of air quality assessment, air quality trend reporting and to meet the requirements for inclusion of the data in provincial and national air quality databases, a 24-hour method of sampling and analyzing Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) concentrations in ambient air is used. Commercially available VOC gaseous samplers are used in this method. This method is applicable for the measurement of VOC concentrations in ambient air in the range of 0.01 to 20 parts per billion (ppb) range.

To obtain timely data for the purpose of air quality assessment, air quality trend reporting, and to meet the requirements for inclusion of the data in provincial and national air quality databases, a method for simultaneously collecting a variety of reactive gases and atmospheric fine particles in ambient air is used. The Versatile Air Pollution Sampler (VAPS) consisting of the commercially available URG™ Model 3000- 02N computerized sampling pump and annular denuder system (ADS) are used in this method.

Commercially available anemometer and vane Wind Speed and Direction sensors are used in the method.

A study was initiated to evaluate the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at two sites in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton. The data presented in this report were collected between January 2008 and January 2009. Overall, particulate concentrations at the two sites were comparable. Concentrations were generally higher during the winter months and for periods of low wind speeds.

The Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) provides real time mass measurement of selected size particles in ambient air samples. This instrument is used in national and local air monitoring networks to provide continuous data on the mass concentrations of particulate matter (PM) of 10μm aerodynamic diameter and less (PM10) or 2.5μm aerodynamic diameter and less (PM2.5) in ground level ambient air. The procedure described in this document is for the operation of TEOM samplers reporting data to the NAPS and AENV network.

Air quality surveys in seven communities around Lake Wabamun were conducted between November 2004 and October 2007. The study was conducted to collect general air quality information. The Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory was used to collect a total of 90 hours of data. The current study is a follow up to one conducted in 2000/01. With the exception of larger particles, concentrations measured in 2000/01 were comparable to those observed during the current study. Large particles measured during the 2000/01 study in part were likely due to road and wind blown dust.
