There are 12 modules in this workbook, many with worksheets for you to complete. There is a pocket on the back cover for storing your worksheets. The pocket on the front cover is for storing other well documents like your driller's report. Extra copies of worksheets are included in the back cover pocket. Some topics will be of more interest to you than others, but we urge you to start with Module 1 “Understanding Groundwater” and then move on to topics that relate to your situation.

Description

Soapweed was approved for provincial listing as an 'endangered' species in 2003. This vascular plant species has an obligate mutualistic relationship with its specialized moth pollinator, the yucca moth, which is also considered endangered both provincially and federally. There are two known natural populations; one population is on the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada Research Substation in Onefour and the other is on the Pinhorn Grrazing Reserve along half a kilometre of southwest-facing coulee slope of the Milk River drainage. Little is known about the Pinhorn population of soapweed, except that there is little evidence of sexual reproduction at the site.

The wheat midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana) is found in most areas around the world wherever wheat is grown. In recent years, significant damage to wheat crops has been reported in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, southern British Columbia, Minnesota, North Dakota and Idaho. All wheat varieties are currently susceptible to wheat midge, but some are more seriously affected than others. Although the midge also attacks other members of the grass family, including barley, couch grass, intermediate wheat grass and rye, infestations on these plants are usually not serious enough to warrant control. Research and breeding for wheat midge resistant wheat varieties is underway at the Cereals Research Centre (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Winnipeg) and the Crop Development Centre (University of Saskatchewan).
