Description

The Lower Athabasca Regional Plan came into effect in September 2012, and was the first regional plan established under Alberta's Land Use Framework. The progress reports offer information regarding the work accomplished or the barriers encountered in implementing the the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan and highlight the status of all the strategic commitments made in the plan. The reports meet the legislative requirements described in the Alberta Land Stewardship Act and the regulatory requirements embedded in the plan. They also fulfill a public commitment to regularly monitor and answer the question "was progress made toward achieving desired regional objectives expressed within the approved regional plans?"

Description

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan establishes a long-term vision for the South Saskatchewan Region and aligns provincial policies at the regional level to balance Alberta's economic, environmental and social goals. The regional plan also includes strategies for responsible energy development, sustainable farming and ranching, recreation, forest management, and nature-based tourism. It has been established under the Alberta Land Stewardship Act, and the Land Use Framework. This version of the SSRP was amended in May 2018, and came into effect on May 31, 2018.

In spring 2010, the Lower Athabasca Regional Advisory Council provided its advice to government on the development of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. This workbook was developed to get feedback from stakeholders, including residents, businesses, communities and other governments, on the key aspects of the council's advice. The workbook focuses on the four key areas for which the Alberta government sought the council's advice. Each section of the workbook gives an overview of the advice requested from the council, highlights some of its learnings and summarizes its recommendations to government.

This booklet is intended to help Albertans understand the ways in which the land is used, the land-use issues, and the choices required to best manage and sustain land for Alberta's future. The first section provides a broad overview of Alberta's land, its uses, management and challenges. The second section provides more information about the many ways in which Alberta's lands are used and the contributions the land makes to our well-being. It includes information about agriculture, forestry, energy, tourism and recreation, settlements, First Nations, Metis Settlements, climate change, watersheds, biological diversity, fish and wildlife, and parks and protected areas.
