Description

Alberta Justice and Attorney General and Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security initiated a joint research project to gather information about the incidences of "against the administration of justice offences" (AAJO) and how they are processed, and to identify risk and protective factors as they relate to Aboriginal offenders. To provide background for this project Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security completed an analysis of the Corrections Offender Management Information System (CoMIS) and the Alberta Community Offender Management system (ACOM) to look at the types of charges of adults and youth who are released from custody. This summary provides an overview of the main findings of the analysis. All statistics were analyzed for the period 2003/2004 to 2008/2009.

Description

Established in 1993, the Aboriginal Justice Initiatives unit provides corporate support and advice to Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security and Alberta Justice divisions concerning Aboriginal justice issues. The Aboriginal Justice Initiatives unit works with Aboriginal communities and organizations in developing justice initiatives that promote safe communities and respect for the law. It also coordinates Aboriginal justice initiatives for both departments. Examples of Solicitor General and Public Security Aboriginal initiatives include First Nation policing, victim services, crime prevention initiatives, correctional centre programs, youth justice committees, cultural training, and community corrections programs. The primary goal stated was to reduce the unnecessary reliance upon incarceration by providing an alternative sentencing mechanism to the courts. In addition the conditional sentence was also intended as an opportunity to further incorporate restorative justice concepts into the sentencing process.
