This Special Events Guide has been developed to provide guidance to the public and Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation District offices in handling requests for special events that take place within the highway right‐of‐way. The goal is to ensure that special events are staged in a safe manner and that highway motorists are not inconvenienced.

Description

The availability of light weight concrete aggregates has become a problem due to infrequent use in industry and Alberta precast concrete girder fabricators have recently served notice that they will no longer supply Type SC and SCC girders in semi-light weight concrete. The Department's Technical Standards Branch has engaged a consultant to re-design the Type SC girder series with 50 MPa standard weight silica fume concrete using the provisions of the CAN/CSA-S6-06 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. This new standard girder design is scheduled to be available in June 2007 and has been designated as the Type SL-510 series. The re-design of the Type SCC standard composite girder series is expected to commence later this year.

The Alberta Transportation bridge inspection program is an essential part of a comprehensive inventory, inspection, maintenance, and data management system called the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) System. The inspection component, introduced in 1987, allows for regular scheduled inspections at all bridge and culvert sites. These inspections provide information to the system that allow inspection management, maintenance programming, budget development, strategic planning, and life cycle planning so that the safety of the traveling public and the investment in bridge structures is optimized. Occasionally, the regular Level 1 inspections highlight problems that require more detailed inspections in order to determine the proper course of action to address a problem. The Level 2 inspections are the tools that provide the detailed inspection and test information to the system. The provision of this additional set of DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY signs will be an added enhancement of wrong way movement notification, and will only be applied to ring road interchanges because they are higher profile/volume traffic facilities.
