Alberta child care accreditation promotes excellence in child care settings and helps families choose the best care for their children. The accreditation standards are based on current research and leading practices focusing on outcomes related to children, staff, families, and communities. Accreditation has been available to licensed day care centres and approved family day homes since 2004; and was expanded in 2009 to include licensed out-of-school care programs.

Certification is the process used by Alberta Human Services to review educational training and competencies to determine eligibility and issue certification towards one of the three levels of certification in accordance with the Alberta Child Care Licensing Regulation. Staff working in licensed child care programs have six months to be certified, but cannot be left alone to supervise children without certification.

The Ministry of Human Services has carefully reviewed the fatality inquiry report into the January 13, 2009 death of four-year-old J C, released on June 2, 2016. The inquiry found that the cause of death was cranial trauma with a large blood clot pressing on the surface of the brain and the manner of death was homicidal. The child was in provincial government care at the time of death.
