This report from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health is the latest in a series of annual reports of tuberculosis control in Alberta. It spans the five-year period from 2005 to 2009, and as such allows both a longitudinal and current view of key measures of tuberculosis control in the province.

Description

Immigrants in Alberta are in many respects healthier than non-immigrants. Compared to non-immigrants, they have lower mortality, lower rates for many diseases, and show signs of better health behaviors. There are, however, health conditions for which immigrants are worse off than non-immigrants. In addition, immigrant’s health status can vary significantly depending on the part of the world from which they arrive. The purpose of this report is to provide a snapshot of the health status, and a detailed look at health issues associated with immigrants to Alberta between 1994 and 2008. The results will drive further analysis and provide a basis for sound evidence to direct public health policies for improving the health of immigrants in Alberta.

Two main data sources for population counts of Alberta are the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) Registry and the Census of Canada (Census). The collection and reporting methods used by these two counts differ greatly, and it is important that these methods are fully understood to help in determining which population estimate is appropriate for use in a particular circumstance. Comparison of the data shows that at the provincial level, the total population for the AHCIP Registry and the 2006 Census are very similar. However, variations are much more distinct when looking at variations in difference by age, sex and geographic area. Generally, the smaller the population of a particular category, the greater the difference.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is one of the leading causes of death in Alberta. The objective of this report is to estimate how many people in Alberta will have IHD in the future. The projections are intended as planning information to be used by health system planners and policy makers. Chronic disease projections are of great value for health system planning at various levels, including services, workforce and capital. They also allow for assessing the future economic effects of a disease. The methodology used for disease projections is complex and has been outlined in a separate report, titled Chronic Disease Projections, Methodology.

This comprehensive cross-ministry report prepared by the Child Health Surveillance Project Data Group provides a snapshot of the health of Alberta’s children in 2005. Alberta’s children enjoy excellent health overall. However, there are some areas of concern. Some children are subjected to abuse and/or neglect; many children are overweight or inactive; some children contract sexually transmitted infections; and many children experience hospitalizations and emergency room visits due to injuries. Statistics are presented on a wide variety of topics, gathered into three main categories: health determinants, health status, and health service utilization.
