Description

This planning document presents the GOA's resource management policy for the public lands and resources within the area. It is intended to be a guide for resource managers, industry and the public with responsibility or interest in the area, rather than a regulatory mechanism. Resource potentials and opportunities for development are identified with a view to assisting in the economic progress of Alberta. The plan is sufficiently flexible so that all future proposals for land use and development may be considered.

Description

The McGregor Lake area was chosen as a prospective Natural Area because of its representative foothills vegetation and the presence of Oplapanax Horridum (Devil's club). A biophysical survey of the McGregor Lake Natural area was undertaken from August 15-21, 1987. The vegetation and physical features of 25 stands, representing seven major vegetation types, were described. The vegetation types were mapped at 1:15,000. The vegetation and flora were found to be characteristic of the Boreal Uplands Ecoregion. Approximately 80 percent of the study area is dominated by lodgepole pine and/or white spruce forests. Other habitats include poplar forests, shrub-forb thickets, tall grass meadows and a treed fen.

Description

Detailed vegetation information is necessary for Forest Management Agreement holders and the government department responsible for forestry matters to provide the best possible forest management plans, wildlife habitat classifications and integrated resource management plans. In November 1990, the Vegetation Information Steering Committee agreed to an enhanced version of the Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) specifications as the minimum standard for inventorying accessible forest lands. This new inventory standard was referred to as the Collective Vegetation Inventory (CVI). This manual provides the background, procedures and specifications associated with implementing an ongoing vegetation inventory as the first truly integrated approach to the mapping of Alberta's vegetation information.

The economic planning and resource development committee of Cabinet approved the Big Bend Sub-regional Integrated Resource Plan on June 19, 1985. This plan identified resource potential and development opportunities within specific resource management areas. The North Athabasca Resource Management Area, in the northern end of the Big Bend planning area, was designated "to provide localised nodal recreational developments catering to a variety of water-oriented uses at Fawcett Lake".

Description

Both Smoke and Iosegun Lakes are well known as sport fisheries lakes and consequently over the years have become destination recreation lakes. Both lakes have some capability for increased recreational use and for residential use as they are located close to the town of Fox Creek. Although a number of other lakes int he region have excellent fisheries potential as well, Iosegun and Smoke have the best potential for expanded development due to the close proximity to established travel corridors and population centers and the fisheries resource is able to withstand limited increased harvesting.

Description

The Ministik Lake Game Bird Sanctuary is a large area of public land some 24 km southeast of Edmonton. Its significance for waterfowl production has been formally recognized since 1911, when it became Alberta's bird sanctuary. Since 1938, Ducks Unlimited Canada has made substantial investments in the area to enhance waterfowl production. Although there has been no formal management plan for the Sanctuary, conflicting land use demands are relatively few, and the area persists today in almost a wilderness condition. In 1985, Ducks Unlimited Canada proposed a major expenditure of funds to further enhance waterfowl production, and requested that the GOA institute a more formal arrangement to ensure land base security. The following plan is a cooperative effort between Ducks Unlimited Canada and Alberta Forestry.
