Twin Valley Reservoir was first filled in 2003 following construction of a new dam on the Little Bow River near its confluence with Mosquito Creek. To fill and operate the new reservoir, increased diversion from the Highwood River to Women’s Coulee and to the Little Bow River occurs in spring according to an approved water management plan. An existing lake, Clear Lake, was also stabilized by diversion from Mosquito Creek near the mouth first operated in 2002, and additional enhancements. This report presents an evaluation and statistical analysis of water quality in Twin Valley Reservoir, Clear Lake, and their tributaries that was prepared using intensive monitoring data collected by Alberta Environment from 1999 to 2010, with reference to previous baseline sampling where needed for statistical testing.

Alberta Environment and Water (AEW) monitors the surface water quality of provincial lakes to evaluate short- and long-term environmental conditions, and to inform lake management and policy. The objectives of the study were to: 1) review AEW provincial water quality database and select lakes with long-term data suitable for statistical trend analysis; 2) provide and overview of water quality conditions and long-term trends in lakes; and 3) investigate the influences of water management and lake level on water quality.

Description

Long term soil acidification monitoring was initiated by Alberta Environment in 1981 to track potential effects of acidic atmospheric deposition on soils in Alberta. Two sites per year were established for a total of eight sites, with baseline sampling completed in 1984. The sites were established each fall at eight locations in the province, as follows: Fort McMurray, Cold Lake, High Prairie, Bruderheim, Devon, Rocky Mountain House, Esther and Twin Butte. In 2008, a ninth site was added in the Fort Saskatchewan Industrial Heartland area in order to provide a better assessment of acidification impacts from major industrial development and oil sands bitumen upgraders proposed for a region. This report presents the data and statistical analysis of six or seven monitoring events up to 2010.
