Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed MEG Energy Corp. Surmont Project. The proposal is for bitumen production capacity of approximately 120,000 barrels per day using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology. The location of the project is approximately 80 km south of Fort McMurray within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The EIA was deemed complete in 2014. The document was developed with the intention of providing leading practices to help operators optimize the use of available reclamation materials on a site-specific basis. The best management practices (BMPs) contained in the document are provided as background to aid operators with current and planned reclamation activities to enable continuous improvement. BMPs provide a reasonable level of guidance on practice for activities representing moderate risk and are based on imperfect knowledge. When using this document it is important to think about interactions between individual BMPs, as well as the BMPs and external factors.
