Description

The Agricultural Land Resource Atlas of Alberta is a collection of agricultural resource maps developed following the completion of a scan of environmental issues facing agriculture in Alberta. The maps were prepared as part of this process, or were added to the collection because of their potential value to Alberta's agricultural community. The maps were recognized for their value to people involved in developing environmental farm plans who could use resource and environmental information on a broad scale.

Description

The report is meant for use as a guide to assist people involved in a professional capacity in land reclamation. It delineates three major regions in the province in an attempt to establish criteria that would apply to each area in general, while recognizing that there are differences within each of the regions. It then discusses soil survey and sampling for baseline and post-disturbance activity, and looks at analytical requirements required for baseline characterization and for disturbed and orphaned areas. The remainder of the report then looks at the physical, chemical, and biological criteria for evaluating the suitability of soil materials for revegetation.

In 2003, the Governor of the State of Montana sent a letter to the American Section of the International Joint Commission requesting that it review the 1921 Order respecting the measurement and apportionment of the St. Mary and Milk Rivers. In January 2004, the Governor of the State of Montana, at the request of the IJC, provided to the Commission a letter and attachment setting out the reasons for Montana's request. The Government of Alberta (August 2004) submission to the IJC consisted of an overall submission as well as submissions from Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

Establishing Native Plant Communities contains information on planning, field operations, site management and assessment, as well as over 100 colour photos. The planning section features information about setting goals, disturbance types, site location and conditions, land use planning, revegetation methods, salvaging materials, the availability of materials and purchasing materials. The field operations section deals with site preparation, seeding, planting, and ensuring establishment. Groundwater quality in the Battersea Drainage Basin, an irrigated area of southern Alberta with a high density of intensive livestock operations, was monitored from 1995 to 2001. The goal was to characterize groundwater flow and quality, and to determine whether groundwater quality changed between this period. The information gathered in this report will be used to identify and promote the most appropriate management practices to minimize water contamination, and to serve as a baseline to monitor the impact of implementation of beneficial management practices in the basin.

These guidelines provide a clear, consistent and integrated information package about using native plant materials throughout Alberta where the revegetation goal is to re-establish a native plant community. The guidelines are not prescriptive; site specific circumstances, including landowner preferences and land use objectives, have to be considered when planning revegetation projects. It is recognized that programs involving revegetation using native species will continue to evolve with better science, technology and sources of native plant materials, and that revegetation approaches can be modified to fit different needs.
