Guidelines for educational institutions interested in becoming a designated institution offering foundational learning and skills development programs. Designation is a status assigned to an educational institution that allows eligible students to apply for financial support through the Foundational Learning Assistance program.

Description

This policy manual aims to provide policy guidance to Advanced Education staff, educational institutions, students and other stakeholders regarding the Foundational Learning Assistance program. The program provides full-time and part-time opportunities for low-income Albertans, who are unemployed or working less than 20 hours per week, to participate in programs of study that increase knowledge and develop skills to prepare them for further education, training, and/or sustainable employment. The Program replaces the Learner Income Support program and the Skills Investment Bursary program.

The Skills for Jobs Task Force was appointed in the Fall of 2019 to evaluate and reimagine Alberta's skill development and apprenticeship system. This final report of the Task Force proposes changes to strengthen and expand the apprenticeship system, and makes recommendations to assist in raising the esteem of apprenticeship-based education.
