Description

As with other Canadian jurisdictions, Alberta is experiencing challenges with its health care system that can be attributed to a worldwide deficit in health workforce supply, as well as challenges with how the existing workforce is utilized. Alberta Health, with input from other Government of Alberta ministries as well as Alberta Health Services, has developed this health workforce strategy to highlight the province's health workforce strengths, to describe current efforts already underway to create a healthy, sustainable, engaged, and efficient health care workforce, and to set out the province's plans to maintain and strengthen this workforce going forward.

Alberta Health invited First Nations and Métis health leaders to meet to discuss Alberta’s primary health care system and how the system can be strengthened through innovation. To begin two days of inspired thinking and sharing, 17 young adults participated in a Youth and Young Adult Primary Health Care Workshop on January 10, 2023. This was followed by an Indigenous Primary Health Care Innovation Forum. Dr. Alika Lafontaine, the first Indigenous president of the Canadian Medical Association, provided an evening opening keynote address to 65 attendees, and the Forum on January 11 was attended by 75 participants.

Description

Stormwater ponds are artificial structures that are critical components of stormwater management systems in many Canadian cities. They serve to prevent flooding of urban areas during excess rainfall. Stormwater ponds also contribute to environmental health by allowing the settlement of dirt and solids from stormwater to the bottom of the pond. As a result, the sediments of stormwater ponds can become enriched with potentially harmful contaminants. The health risks posed to anglers by contact with stormwater and sediments and consumption of fish from stormwater ponds are not well characterized. The City of Lacombe (Alberta) is a municipality with two stormwater ponds stocked with sterile fish for angling. Alberta Health collected water, sediment and fish from these two ponds over two seasons (fall 2010 and spring 2011) and analyzed the samples for a suite of contaminants.
