Description

From 1913 to 2019, Municipal Affairs produced the Municipal Affairs Population List that contained population counts for Alberta municipalities, Metis Settlements, and First Nations communities based on the most recent municipal or federal census. In 2020, the Municipal Affairs Population List was discontinued following the repeal of the Determination of Population Regulation. With the approval of the new Municipal Census Regulation in 2023, Municipal Affairs resumed the publication of the Municipal Affairs Population List.

This release examines the demographic and geographic aspects of the Aboriginal identity population in Alberta from the 2016 Census. The Aboriginal population is relatively young and growing at a fast rate. The majority of Aboriginal people lived in urban areas of the province.

Aboriginal people in Alberta face different socioeconomic circumstances than other Albertans. At the provincial level in 2011, Aboriginal people had lower incomes and were less likely to be in the labour force. If they were participating in the labour force, they were more likely to be unemployed. Almost three times as many Aboriginal people reported low educational attainment compared with non‑Aboriginal Albertans. Aboriginal seniors were more likely to be living in low income and less likely to be living alone. The proportion of Aboriginal children living in low income was over twice the comparable rate for non‑Aboriginal children.

The 2006 Census Analysis series focuses on labour market activities in Alberta and includes analysis for the current and previous Census year(s). The other two reports in the series are the Alberta Profile and Persons with Disabilities Profile.
