As with other Canadian jurisdictions, Alberta is experiencing challenges with its health care system that can be attributed to a worldwide deficit in health workforce supply, as well as challenges with how the existing workforce is utilized. Alberta Health, with input from other Government of Alberta ministries as well as Alberta Health Services, has developed this health workforce strategy to highlight the province's health workforce strengths, to describe current efforts already underway to create a healthy, sustainable, engaged, and efficient health care workforce, and to set out the province's plans to maintain and strengthen this workforce going forward.

The Navigator Program is intended to address the immediate challenges facing Indigenous patients, communities, and organizations by providing financial support to First Nations, Métis Nation of Alberta, Metis Settlements, and Indigenous serving organizations to recruit and retain navigators to assist patients overcome barriers accessing primary health care services across multiple service providers, support patient advocacy, gain access to resources, and improve care coordination.
