Presents results of watershed assessments conducted in areas covered by the North Central Native Trout Recovery Program, which include the Kakwa River, Berland River, North Saskatchewan River, Clearwater River, and Upper Red Deer River watersheds. Watershed assessments provide information used to set appropriate fishing regulations, to understand and correct problems with fish habitat and to guard against invasive species.

The Athabasca rainbow trout, a small salmonid native to small streams and rivers of the upper Athabasca watershed, is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to increase the number of Athabasca rainbow trout populations in low risk categories by a minimum of 10 per cent and to reverse the trend of an increasing number of populations in high risk categories. The plan provides background information on the Athabasca rainbow trout, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Westslope cutthroat trout, the only subspecies of cutthroat trout native to Alberta, historically inhabited most streams in south-western Alberta from the alpine to the prairies. Today they occupy only a small fraction of their historic range and are largely restricted to the Rocky Mountains and foothills. The species is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to protect and maintain the existing pure Westslope cutthroat trout population at self-sustaining levels, and re-establish additional pure populations to self-sustaining levels within the species' historical range in Alberta. The plan provides background information on the Westslope cutthroat trout, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

It has been designated a Species of Special Concern because of the declines in distribution and abundance, as well as continued threats from habitat alteration and introduced competitive species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of restoring and maintaining viable, self-sustaining bull trout populations throughout the majority of the species' historic range in the province, and to once again provide some measure of harvest opportunity for the species. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat.
