Description

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along an approximate 7 km reach of Pincher Creek and an approximate 3 km reach of Kettles Creek through the Pincher Creek. The design discharge for Pincher Creek is 179 m³/s upstream of the Kettles Creek confluence and 216 m³/s downstream of the confluence. The design discharge for Kettles Creek is 33.4 m³/s at Highway 6 and 37.3 m³/s at its confluence with Pincher Creek. The study was prepared in March 1993. This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Athabasca River, Muskeg Creek and the Tawatinaw River through Athabasca. The study area includes an almost 6 km reach of the Athabasca River, an almost 1 km reach of Muskeg Creek and an approximate 3 km reach of the Tawatinaw River. The design discharge for the Athabasca River is 6200 m³/s. The design discharges for Muskeg Creek and the Tawatinaw River are 30.0 m³/s and 65.0 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in March 1993. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along an approximate 31 km length of the Highwood River through High River. The design discharge for the Highwood River ranges from 750 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 650 m³/s at the downstream extent. Included in the study area are lands flooded by overflow from the Highwood River into the Little Bow River via Baker Creek and the Little Bow Canal, along approximately 3 km of Baker Creek and almost 1 km of the Little Bow River. The flood hazard mapping in a portion of the overflow area and along the Little Bow River is currently under review by Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the South Saskatchewan River as well as Ross and Seven Persons Creeks through Medicine Hat. The study area includes an approximate 35 km reach of the South Saskatchewan River, an approximate 3 km reach of Ross Creek and an approximate 11 km reach of Seven Persons Creek. Ross Creek joins Seven Persons Creek less than 1 km upstream of its confluence with the South Saskatchewan River. The design discharge for the South Saskatchewan River is 5230 m³/s. The design discharge for Ross Creek is 152 m³/s. The design discharge for Seven Persons Creek is 121 m³/s upstream of the Ross Creek confluence and 273 m³/s downstream of the confluence. The original study was prepared in May 1986. An addendum with updated flood hazard mapping was published in February 1991. This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Bow River and Bighill and Jumpingpound Creeks through Cochrane. The study area includes about 27 kilometres of the Bow River, almost five kilometres of Bighill Creek and about five kilometres of Jumpingpound Creek. Ice jam flooding is the design condition along the Bow River. The study uses analysis of historic ice jam data at River Avenue Bridge to determine 100-year ice jam water levels along the Bow River mainstem. Open water flooding is the design condition for Bighill and Jumpingpound Creeks. The design discharges for Bighill and Jumpingpound Creeks are 20.8 m³/s and 323 m³/s respectively. The headwaters of the Bow River are in the Rocky Mountains upstream of Lake Louise. Although there are a number of storage reservoirs in the basin upstream of Cochrane, their primary purpose is to provide hydroelectric power and thus they offer little opportunity to moderate flood flows.
