Description

Alberta Envrionmental Protection has intensively monitored the Bow River ecosystem since 1989. This work was designed to determine the distribution of contaminants from the Canada Creosote site in the aquatic ecosystem, to protect domestic water supplies and to ensure the human consumption of fish was safe. This report evaluates changes in water quality over the two years since the containment system was intalled.

Description

In November 1989, a liquid mixture of various contaminants including the wood preservatives creosote and pentachlorophenol (PCP) was found seeping into the Bow River adjacent to the abandoned Canada Creosote site in Calgary. A temporary berm was built in the river around the seepage area on November 6-9, 1989, and rebuilt on October 9-19, 1990. Contaminants were removed from the bermed area. A permanent barrier to contaminant flow was installed along the entire shoreline between April 29 and May 3, 1995, and a system designed to prevent the flow of contaminated groundwater to the river around the barrier was operational by February 8, 1996.

Water quality surveys were conducted throughout the Bow River basin during low-flow conditions in the summers of 1994 and 1995. These surveys were designed to assess the impact on the mainstem Bow River of specific tributaries, irrigation return flows and effluents, and to address a recommendation of the Bow River Water Quality Task Force concerning the integration and optimization of sampling efforts by different stakeholder groups.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Bow River and Exshaw Creek through Municipal District of Bighorn, including Exshaw. The study area includes an approximate 15 km reach of the Bow River and an approximate 1 km reach of Exshaw Creek. The design discharge for the Bow River ranges from 728 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 762 m³/s at the downstream extent. The design discharge for Exshaw Creek is 14.3 m³/s. The study was prepared in February 1996. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

Water quality in southern Alberta's Bow River, as measured by bacteriological indicators, has been affected by increasing population and development in the Bow Basin. This report documents levels of coliform bacteria in the Bow River for three time periods: 1951-52, 1967-75, and 1978-94, and includes data compiled from all agencies sampling in the Bow River basin for over 45 mainstem sites and for a number of tributaries.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Bow River and Policeman Creek through Canmore. The study area includes an approximate 20 km reach of the Bow River and an almost 6 km reach of Policeman Creek. The design discharge for the Bow River is 673 m³/s upstream of the Policeman Creek confluence and 698 m³/s downstream of the confluence. The design discharge for Policeman Creek ranges from 95.8 m³/s at the Bow River confluence to 37.2 m³/s farther upstream, in a non-overflow area. The study was prepared in March 1993. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.
