Description

Colin-Cornwall Lakes Wildland Park, established in 1998, is located about 100 km northeast of Fort Chipewyan and lies adjacent to the Saskatchewan border. A number of organic and mineral wetland types occur in the area, including bogs, fens, swamps and marshes. The diversity of landscapes and habitats in the park supports a wide variety of plant and animal species. Many species found here are typical of those known from the Canadian Shield region of northern Alberta. Others are poorly understood in terms of their presence, numbers and distribution. This is the case for the mollusc fauna of Colin-Cornwall Lakes Wildland Park. As far as is known, this is the first study or collection made of the molluscs in the park.

Recreation corridors are an important component of an overall strategy to increase physical activity and improve the health and wellness of Albertans. Recreation corridors also provide opportunities for economic development, rural diversification, tourism promotion, and economic retention. The Alberta Recreation Corridors Legislative Review Committee was established to provide advice regarding the review of existing legislation related to recreation corridors in Alberta, to address the needs, issues and concerns related to existing trails and future recreation corridors, and to consider, if appropriate, what new legislation would be necessary to support planning, design, construction and operation of recreation corridors in the province. This report provides the Committee's recommendations to the Minister of Community Development.

Trapping is a traditional activity that reflects cultural and aboriginal lifestyles, which Alberta Community Development (CD) wishes to support. A number of Registered Fur Management Areas (RFMA) were included within parks and protected areas designated or expanded between 1995 and 2001. Commitments to trappers in these areas will be honoured. In addition to the Wildlife Act and its regulations, the Provincial Parks Act and its regulations and the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves and Natural Areas Act, fur trapping in Alberta's Parks and Protected Areas will also be managed pursuant to this policy. The intent of this policy is to ensure an appropriate balance is maintained between fur trapping and the public's desire for opportunities to view wildlife in a natural and safe setting and to make trapping operations as similar as possible between parks and protected areas and general Crown land. The principal goal of the work outlined in this report was to generate an avifaunal inventory for a newly designated protected area, viz. Colin-Cornwall Lakes (CCL) Wildland Provincial Park, located in northeasternmost Alberta (Figure 1). Established in March 1998, the Park encompasses a 704 km² area within the central-eastern portion of the Kazan Upland Sub-Region, of the province’s Canadian Shield Natural Region.

An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung 2001) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. The 2000 survey was the first for these three parks. The next survey was conducted in the summer of 2001 (Macaulay 2002) within two of the wildland parks that are located in the Kazan Upland Subregion, namely La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow.

Caribou Mountains Wildland Park, within the Subarctic Subregion, was the focus of an odonate survey in the summer of 2003. The Subregion where this wildland park is located contains numerous muskeg ponds, streams and lake habitats. The purpose of the survey was to provide an annotated summary of some of the odonate species that occur in the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. The information obtained contributes towards an increased understanding of the odonate fauna found within this wildland park but also within the broader context of Alberta.
