Description

In view of potential coal mine development in the Mountain Park area of the upper McLeod River and upper Cardinal River basins, Alberta Environmental Protection carried out a one year sampling program to obtain baseline data on water quality and benthos in the project area which would serve to complement and corroborate data being collected by the proponent. This report provides basic information on the methods used and compiles the data obtained during the program.

In 1992, Water Sciences Branch began an intensive study of Thunder Lake to determine the cause of increasing algal growth and poor water quality. Of particular interest was a diversion to the lake from a tributary of the Paddle River, which was suspected of increasing the lake’s supply of phosphorus and nitrogen. The purpose of the monitoring program was to assess 1) changes in water quality in the lake, 2) the quantity of phosphorus and nitrogen in the diversion water compared with other nutrient sources, 3) what the lake would be like if the diversion is discontinued, 4) other ways to maintain water quality in Thunder Lake. This report highlights the results of this study.

Management of environmental toxics is a major issue on the environmental policy agenda in Canada and around the world. There is growing evidence that long-term, low-level exposure can occur from the atmospheric transport of pollutants over long distances and that the substances are associated with effects on human health and the environment. No region, however remote, is assured of being safe from airborne toxic pollutants. Recognizing the significance of air toxics, it is important to document the Alberta air toxics management program. This document presents an overview of the existing management system for controlling industrial air toxics emissions.

This report initiates the process of identifying indicators for biodiversity monitoring by reviewing the legislation, policies/guidelines, and external agreement/agencies that provide a basis for management on Alberta’s forested landscape. These documents outlined a framework for monitoring at the regional and provincial scale within Alberta. Furthermore, the report reviews a large number of ongoing monitoring programs in Alberta. This produced a profile of mandates, monitoring frameworks, monitored taxa (indicators), geographical coverage, and identified organizations currently involved in monitoring. A following report will identify specific indicators for monitoring biodiversity in Alberta’s forested landscapes.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along Lamont Creek and two unnamed tributaries through Lamont. The study area includes an approximate 6 km reach of Lamont Creek and almost 3 km of combined tributary stream length. The design discharge for Lamont Creek ranges from 11.2 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 16.6 m³/s at the downstream extent, with the design discharge through Lamont between 12.7 m³/s and 13.0 m³/s. The design discharges for the upstream and downstream tributaries are 1.5 m³/s and 5.4 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in March 1998. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

This wildlife status report looks at the Canadian toad, one of three species of the genus Bufo found in Alberta (the other species being the western toad and the great plains toad). Once a common inhabitant of the northern interior plains, the population of this species in the province has experience a sharp decline recently, and populations in other areas of its range may be declining as well. This report summarizes current and historical information on the Canadian Toad in Alberta, as a step in reviewing the status of the species in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This report summarizes the information gathered on the water quality of Field Lake during the initial period of study (1981 - 1986) and from three sets of samples collected during the summer of 1997. The impact of the effluent discharge is assessed by comparing 1) water quality two years before and four years after the discharge began, 2) concentrations of substances in the lake water with relevant Alberta and Canadian water quality guidelines, and 3) 1985-86 data with 1997 data.
