Description

The long-billed curlew is the largest member of the sandpiper family and is distinguishable by its long downward curved bill and large size. It has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Alberta and Canada due to the contraction of its range and small, possibly declining, population. Habitat alteration is the primary threat to this species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining the current distribution and population of long-billed curlew in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

The long-billed curlew is the largest member of the sandpiper family and is distinguishable by its long downward curved bill and large size. Description

Curlew populations have declined across North American as a result of overhunting and habitat loss, and in Alberta the long-billed curlew is classified as May Be At Risk. The 1998 Alberta status report on the long-billed curlew recommended formal population surveys in order to better assess the current population and implement effective management. An inventory of long-billed curlews was carried out in the spring of 2001, and this report summarizes the methods and results of the inventory. In addition to curlews, data were collected on six other prairie bird species: ferruginous hawk, short-eared owl, burrowing owl, upland sandpiper, loggerhead shrike and Sprague's pipit. The data for these species are also included here.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the long-billed curlew, the largest shorebird, and the most southerly breeding curlew, in North America. Once abundant over most of the prairie regions of the United States and Canada, populations have declined throughout most of the its breeding range since the early 1900s as a result of both overhunting and habitat loss. It is currently on the list of species that may be at risk of declining to nonviable population levels in Alberta. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
