Description

This wildlife status report looks at the western blue blag, which is the only species of iris native to Alberta. Distributed primarily in the western United States, it penetrates Canada along the southeastern flanks of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. It is considered rare in Canada and is currently designated as Threatened nationally. This report is intended to summarize the existing information on the species in Alberta to assist with reassessment of its status. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

The western blue flat conservation program, managed by the Alberta Conservation Association, was established to deliver the monitoring and stewardship activities identified in the Action plan. In 2003, two new landowners joined the program for a total of eight participants. In 2002, a monitoring protocol for the conservation program was initiated. This includes a landowner questionnaire, tracking of on-the-ground management on cooperating ranches, and monitoring the response of western blue flag over time.

Description

In Canada, naturally occurring western blue flag is known only from a small area of southwestern Alberta. Because of its restricted range and small population size, the species is listed as Threatened in the province. A maintenance and recovery plan was developed for the species. Major objectives of the plan included a revised census of western blue flag based on information regarding new sites, and the development and implementation of an ongoing inventory and monitoring program. During the spring and early summer 2002, an inventory and monitoring program was developed and implemented. This report describes the inventory procedures and monitoring protocol developed for western blue flag.

Description

In Canada, naturally occurring populations of western blue flag (Iris missouriensis) are restricted to the southwestern comer of Alberta. Because of its limited range and abundance, it was listed as threatened under the Alberta Wildlife Act. Earlier status reports indicated that the population was limited and declining; however, new sites inventoried in 2000 and 2001 have substantially increased stem counts. Nevertheless, the species must still be considered vulnerable because of its limited range, its strict habitat requirements, and because it occurs mainly on private land. In 2000 and 2001 all known naturally-occurring western blue flag sites were inventoried. Results contained in this report indicate there are eleven naturally-occurring sites in Alberta with a total of 14,757 stems. Information for each site is described and management recommendations are provided.

Description

In Canada, all of the known naturally occurring populations of western blue flag occur in the Cardston area of southwestern Alberta, within 10 km of the United States border. Prior to this project, six sites of naturally occurring western blue flag were confirmed in Alberta. As a result of investigations carried out in 2000, it is believed that only four of the six remain. Two new sites were discovered near previously known locations. Inventories conducted at all sites in 2000 revealed a total of 8705 stems. Information is inadequate to determine populations trends at most sites; however, western blue flag appears to be declining at a site in Police Outpost Provincial Park.
