Description

The intent of this report is to summarise and interpret water temperature and dissolved oxygen data that have been collected at sites along the Oldman River during the summer months of 1991-2001, following the construction of the Oldman River Dam. The effects of the impoundment of the Oldman River on water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the 327 km from the Oldman River Dam to the confluence of the Oldman and Bow rivers are assessed. Predictions made prior to the impoundment of the Oldman River are evaluated and compared with post impoundment records. As well, the pre-impoundment implementation of the WQRRS model is examined as the basis for the establishment of current minimum flows.

Temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) are important water quality variables which affect the viability of fish and other aquatic organisms. These variables can potentially be influenced by river flow. Understanding the effects of flow and other factors on these important variables is critical for river management, particularly in the face of increasing demands on river resources. In this report, simple empirical methods are used to investigate the relationships between water temperature, DO, air temperature, and flow at two locations in the Red Deer River. Available water temperature, DO, discharge, and air temperature data were compiled for a number of sites along the Red Deer River. Compliance with water temperature and dissolved oxygen requirements for fish were evaluated at all sites using daily data. Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) is an important variable in the oxygen balance of rivers, in particular during the winter under low flow and extensive ice-cover. In 1989, a method to measure SOD in-situ was developed and used to measure winter SOD rates in the Athabasca River. The main objectives of the 1990 study were to determine if SOD rates increased over the winter and to determine the longitudinal trend of SOD in the Athabasca River and the Wapiti-Smoky River system.

Proposed and existing pulp mill developments in the Athabasca River Basin impact on winter dissolved oxygen conditions in the rivers that receive their effluent. In 1987, Alberta Environment started using water quality models to simulate dissolved oxygen levels. This information was used to formulate effluent standards and for management of basin water quality. This report describes the theory of air to liquid gas exchange, methods to measure reaeration, the procedure designed to measure under ice reaeration, results of the field study, and conclusions from the study.
