This document is a best practices manual intended to give guidance and direction on minimizing risk and liability for persons with an interest in operating and maintaining trails. Specifi cally, it seeks to help trail operators, managers and owners, mitigate risk and reduce liability, that can arise from trail design, trail use and maintenance operations. The techniques discussed here are intended to be applied with prudence and due consideration of the particular circumstances of each trail.

Presents a proposed system for classifying trails in the province. Trails can be classified by trail conditions and levels of experience (primitive, semi-developed and developed) and by type of activity (non-motorized use, motorized use, mixed use, extreme use, and water use). The use of a trail classification system is expected to assist the following groups: trail developers and operators; landowners and municipal governments; land managers; trail users and leaders; and governments and other funders in assessing trail requests and grant applications.
