Description

Environmental impact assessment and associated applications pertaining to the proposed Suncor Energy Inc. Lewis project. The proposal is for in situ extraction with an estimated total bitumen production of 160,000 bpd and an operational life of up to 40 years. The project would be developed in four phases, supported by cogeneration of electricity to be constructed within the first two phases. Project components include gas fired steam generation including some cogeneration, water treatment and recycling, bitumen treatment, multi-well production pads, steam delivery pipelines, product recovery pipelines, local access roads, and borrow pits. Description

The Ecosystem Services approach pilot on wetlands is part of the Alberta Environment and Water’s 10-year ecosystem services road map. Its completion and results are considered a progression in understanding and applying an ecosystem services approach to support decision making. Ecosystems provide innumerable services that are underrepresented or absent in most economic development decisions; however, these services contribute to development objectives (e.g., scenic quality of the land) and to realizing quality of life goals. Identifying and understanding many of the services from wetlands can provide more information to decision makers, which may help to prevent unintended consequences from development decisions.

Description

The Calgary-Edmonton Intercity Passenger Rail Study consisted of 3 phases: Phase I consisted of five sub-studies aimed at identifying a role for passenger rail. Consultants Loram International Ltd. concluded that a high-speed rail service potentially could be useful but that additional analyses were required. Phase II was the result: four sub-studies on modal demand, route assessment, operational costs, and financial matters. Phase III was aimed at refining the earlier results, so that a decision could be made whether or not to proceed with design, engineering and protection of right-of-way, should the government so decide. Included were studies of the route, downtown access, facilities, rolling stock, and economic and financial aspects. This presentation provides the results of all work completed to date.
