Alberta’s ambient air quality objectives and guidelines are developed to protect Alberta’s air quality. They are intended to provide protection of the environment and human health to an extent technically and economically feasible, as well as socially and politically acceptable. This document provides objective levels for pentachlorophenol, as well as a short description of the substance and the effects of exposure to pentachlorophenol on humans, other animals, and vegetation.

Isopropanol is a colourless, clear, volatile liquid under standard conditions. It can react with air or oxygen to form unstable peroxides. Isopropanol has widespread use as a solvent and as a component of many industrial, commercial and consumer products. Isopropanol is also a naturally occurring metabolic product in a variety of microorganisms and plants; as such, it occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods.

It occurs naturally in food and is also added as flavouring to foods. This compound is used predominately in the production of plasticizers for PVC resins, hexyl esters, and arylates. It is also used in textiles and as a solvent and wetting agent.

Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for reduced sulphur compounds (RSC). Reduced sulphur compounds are a complex family of substances. They are defined by the presence of sulphur in a reduced state and are generally characterized by strong odours at relatively low concentrations. One member of the family—hydrogen sulphide (H2S)—is known to have highly toxic properties, and can cause negative health effects at low concentrations. Natural sources of RSC in air include volcanoes and sulphur springs, oceans and estuaries, and exposed faces of sulphur-containing oil and coal deposits. The primary anthropogenic sources include oil and gas processing facilities, Kraft pulp mills, chemical manufacturing plants, and livestock operations.

Manganese may be found in over 100 minerals, primarily in the form of oxides, silicates and carbonates. It is also found in coal and crude oil. Manganese is used primarily in making steels and nonferrous alloys. Other uses for manganese and manganese compounds include in the manufacturing of batteries, fertilizers, pesticides and ceramics, as a gasoline additive and as a dietary supplement. Manganese compounds are also used in animal feeds, pharmaceutical products, and wood preservatives and as catalysts.

Also, they are formed during combustion of organic materials and are present in volcanic gases. Anthropogenic xylenes are primarily produced via the catalytic reforming of petroleum and as by-products of the cracking of crude and heavy oil. The major use of xylenes is as an additive to gasoline during blending to enhance the fuel’s octane rating. Ethylbenzene is a naturally occurring component of crude oil. It is formed during combustion of organic materials; thus, forest, grass and other biomass fires will release ethylbenzene to the atmosphere.
