Welcome to Aquatic Ecosystems: The Elbow River, a field study designed for Bio 20 students. This is a curriculum-connected full-day study of the Elbow River with multidisciplinary post-activity support. The intent of this program is to provide a hands-on, engaging outdoor component, which will meet the needs of Biology 20 Unit B: Ecosystems and Population Change. This program is also written to achieve the mandate of the Alberta Government - Tourism, Parks, and Recreation and also addresses the four program goals of preservation, outdoor recreation, heritage appreciation, and heritage tourism. The field study is designed to focus on testing and studying the abiotic and biotic factors of the aquatic ecosystem. Students are challenged to predict and then discover what the factors are indicating. This is a curriculum-connected full-day study of the Elbow River with multidisciplinary preparatory and post-activity support. The intent of this program is to provide a hands-on, engaging outdoor component, which will meet the needs of grades 8, Unit E: Freshwater and Saltwater Systems and grade 9, Unit C: Environmental Chemistry. This program is also written to achieve the mandate of the Alberta Government - Tourism, Parks, and Recreation and also addresses the four program goals of preservation, outdoor recreation, heritage appreciation, and heritage tourism. The preparatory activities are designed to prepare students for an off-site visit to the Elbow River. The preparatory activities focus on introducing students to the watershed monitoring area, related vocabulary, to water testing procedures, and to the expectations of safe and appropriate student behaviour within a protected area. This plan addresses the overall management of 52 Provincial Recreation Areas and Bragg Creek Provincial Park, all located in the Kananaskis Region and west of the City of Calgary. Background information on each of the 52 PRAs and Bragg Creek Provincial Park is presented, as well as proposed management intent statements, management objectives, and management strategies. The plan will be used by Alberta Parks as well as staff of other government agencies, First Nations, stakeholders and the general public and is meant to form the foundation for more specific management strategies or annual operating plans and budgets within these parks. Management plans are normally reviewed and updated ten years after approval.

Whether to see their friends and relatives, for business, or for pleasure millions of visits are made to destinations in the Calgary and area tourism region by residents of Alberta, other parts of Canada, the United States and overseas countries. To better understand the volume and characteristics of these visitors, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation has prepared a special analyses of the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) and the International Travel Survey (ITS), which are both conducted by Statistics Canada. These consumer surveys provide tourism information for travel in Alberta by Canadians and trips to the province made by U.S. and overseas visitors. Data in this publication includes same-day and overnight trips for Albertans and residents from other parts of Canada, and overnight trips only for U.S. and overseas visitors.

Economic impact analysis is used to determine the effects of additional tourist spending primarily on employment, income (value-added) and government tax revenues in an economy. It provides a snapshot of the economy at a particular point in time based on the initial spending. It is based on the premise that initial or direct effects alone are poor measures of the total impact of tourism on the economy. It is often the case that indirect and induced effects are just as large, if not greater, than direct effects and frequently involve sectors and activities distantly, but importantly, connected to the initial activity. Let's suppose a tourist travels to Alberta and spends $100 at a gas station in Alberta. In an economic impact analysis, the focus is not on the amount of sales (in this case $100), but rather the impact of those sales on the provincial/regional economy.

Cypress Hills Provincial Park contains many natural and cultural values that contribute to a unique ecology in the province and a diversity of attractions for park visitors. However, The current age and composition of the vegetation combined with frequent fire weather conditions create the potential for a catastrophic wildfire in the park that would put significant values at risk. This report addresses the evolution of wildfire as a historic and fundamental agent of forest and grassland renewal and evaluates the current wildfire threat to both human and ecological values. It finds that aggressive fire and forest management commitments are required to protect both human and ecological values in both the short term and long term in Cypress Hill Provincial Park, and a summary of fire and forest management strategies is presented in the conclusion of the report.

A study of recreational vehicle (RV) campers and campgrounds was conducted in February and March of 2009 to assess if Alberta campgrounds are adequate in numbers, condition and diversity. Study findings provide an assessment of the status of the travel industry in light of economic changes, the current campground situation in Alberta in terms of the supply side (manufacturers and RV campground operations) and the demand side (users of Alberta campgrounds), highlights significant trends impacting RV campground operation and development, and identifies best practices in campground operations.
