Description

As part of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to be open and accountable to the public, all ministries are required to prepare and make public three-year ministry business plans. The ministry business plan encompasses the department and all consolidated entities, and aligns with the strategic direction of the Government of Alberta. Each business plan includes a description of the ministry, desired outcomes, priority initiatives, and performance measures and indicators. Current and forecast budgeting information for the planning period is also included.

Each year, a small number of Alberta babies are born with treatable conditions that can lead to severe physical disabilities, developmental delay, other health problems or even death. The purpose of the Newborn Metabolic Screening Program is to identify and treat infants for these conditions before the onset of symptoms. (Please note that the name of the program was changed to the Alberta Newborn Screening Program in December 2021.) Newborn screening is time-sensitive. Babies affected with some of the screened conditions will start to become ill and may suffer irreversible damage soon after birth. Early effective treatment can better manage these conditions and decrease morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this document is to set out the program’s policies, and to describe the roles and responsibilities of the various parties in implementing the program.

Alberta Health and Wellness announced the creation of a Health Action Plan for Alberta in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. The majority of working Albertans are not covered by government-sponsored programs, and spending on drugs is increasing at a rate three times higher than that of physician or hospital services. To support the development of an Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy, two consultations were undertaken in 2008. The Strategy outlined in this document is a response to the findings and recommendations of these consultations, and its goal is to make drug coverage more accessible, affordable, efficient and therapeutically effective.

The Continuing Care Strategy represents the government’s approach to accelerate the growth and modernization of health and personal care services. It is intended to provide new ways of delivering services, offering more choice to Albertans in their homes and communities A new model for continuing care will give people the choice to age where they want, with the resources they need to live safely where they choose. The new model will mean long-term care beds are available, accommodating the changing health needs of Albertans. Home-care services, a variety of supportive living or assisted living options, and freedom to make health and personal care choices are all important parts of our strategy to meet the desires and needs of aging Albertans, giving them more opportunities to age on their own terms, and in the right place.

VISION 2020 outlines a future for Alberta’s health system and describes how health care will be delivered in a strong, sustainable way by the year 2020. It provides direction on how to improve the delivery of services across the whole health system including public health, acute and continuing care, delivery of pharmaceuticals, ambulance services, health system governance and accountability.
