The Alberta Water Well Survey was conducted to investigate the water well stewardship practices of private well owners in Alberta. The results of the survey will help determine how to best engage well owners in taking responsibility for proper well management. Approximately 400,000 to 450,000 Albertans rely upon privately-owned water wells for household needs.

This report summarizes the results of limnological and water quality investigations conducted by Alberta Environment on the Lesser Slave Lake in 2000 and 2001 and on the lake outfall between 2000 and 2002. It also provides a comparison between results from this and an earlier limnological study carried out by Alberta Environment between 1991 and 1993.

Description

Pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other known or suspected endocrine disrupting compounds have been widely detected in various waters throughout the world. Prior to this study, however, sampling for these substances was rather limited within Alberta. In 2002 and 2003, due to concerns about potential impacts on humans, livestock, aquatic organisms, and wildlife, Alberta Environment collected wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and receiving river water from numerous locations throughout the province and analysed them for a broad range of organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs). This initial survey, encompassing an assortment of pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, steroids, surfactants, and plasticizers, was designed to determine which compounds are released by WWTPs in Alberta and to assess their presence in receiving river waters.

In 1998, a total of 9 300 497 kg of pesticide active ingredient (ai) was sold in, or shipped into, Alberta. Pesticides sold into the Agriculture sector accounted for 95.8% of all pesticides sold, with the Commercial/Industrial sector accounting for 3.3% of sales, and the Domestic sector accounting for 0.8% of sales. The types of pesticides sold were predominantly herbicides, at 76.7%. Adjuvants and surfactants made up the next largest category at 14.25%. Insecticides made up 5.4% of sales, while fungicides made up 3.6% of sales.
