Description

Bill 8, the Emergency Management Amendment Act, 2018, was introduced in the Legislature in April 2018. It includes proposed changes to the Emergency Management Act and development of a Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation (LEMR). Further debate on the bill was held over until the fall session of the Legislature to allow time to gather input from municipal emergency management stakeholders including elected officials, senior municipal administration, directors of emergency management, and law enforcement. This report back document summarizes the input received during stakeholder engagement sessions held in June 2018.

Description

Timber scaling is the measurement of harvested timber to determine its net roundwood or product volume. It is used to assess crown timber charges and ensure the sustainability of the timber resource by determining the harvested volume in relation to the annual allowable cut. Timber scaling must be done by a person holding a valid Scaler's Permit. This policy is written in accordance with the Timber Management Regulation and the Scaling Regulation and is intended primarily to provide the ground rules under which the training and permitting of timber scalers shall occur in Alberta. This document will further define the requirements for course instructors, course content and duration, obtaining and retaining a scalers permit, and examination procedures.

Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the mining and petroleum development sector that occurred in December, 2015. A motor coach operator dropped off workers at a T-intersection of a refinery worksite. As the motor coach moved forward to complete a left turn at the intersection, a worker crossing the road was struck and caught underneath the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries. The location is approximately 40 km north of Fort McMurray in the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The EIA was deemed complete in 2009. A Health Action Plan for Alberta was announced by the Minister of Health and Wellness in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. A consultation process was implemented to meet key stakeholders, summarize their comments, and make key recommendations. Meetings were held with 16 stakeholder groups representing patients, physicians, pharmacists, employers, benefit providers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Written submissions were also welcomed. This document summarizes the stakeholders input and presents 10 recommendations for the government to implement.

Double balloon endoscopy/ enteroscopy (DBE) is a non-surgical approach that provides access to the entire inner mucosal surface of the small intestine for endoscopic visual examination, biopsy and treatment. DBE is being heralded as a breakthrough technology because accessing the deep small intestine endoscopically has largely been unsuccessful by conventional approaches. The purpose of this study was to to review the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of DBE and examine the potential social, fiscal and economic impact should it become a publicly funded health service in Alberta.

Gillett's Checkerspot is a colourful and distinctive butterfly that has a very small global range and a global conservation status rank of imperiled/vulnerable. The species is relatively well known with respect to its biology and ecology. Available information is summarized in this report and differences between USA and Alberta populations are discussed. The ecology of the species renders it amenable to integration with economic activity. It can be accommodated without significant expense or impact on other natural resource uses. In some cases, forest canopy removal associated with development can be a positive factor for the species but in the past this has been an accidental byproduct of such activity. Brief strategic and operations guidelines are recommended.
