The Alberta Activity Index (AAX) closely tracks economic activity. Developed by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, it is a weighted average of nine monthly indicators (employment, average weekly earnings, retail trade, wholesale trade, manufacturing, new truck sales, housing starts, rigs drilling and oil production). The data is based information reported to Workers’ Compensation Board by March 31 for employers who are required to have WCB accounts. The dataset contain employer-specific information on occupational fatality, lost-time and disabling injury claims and presented as counts and rates. This information allows for the tracking of workplace health and safety performance indicators over time.

The study is based upon an online poll conducted between March 24 and April 5, 2017 on behalf of the researchers by a commercial polling company. The respondents comprised 2,000 Albertans engaged in paid employment in the previous 12 months.

Lists the employment rate, unemployment rate, and participation rate by census year, gender, and municipality and municipal district. The employment rate refers to the number of persons employed in the week (Sunday to Saturday) prior to Census Day, expressed as a percentage of the total population 15 years of age and over. The participation rate measures the total labour force (comprised of those who are employed and unemployed, combined) relative to the size of the working-age population. The unemployment rate refers to unemployed persons expressed as a percentage of the active labour force in the week previous to Census Day.
