Description

This report investigates the need for a seed zone map specifically adapted to shrub species. The objectives were to: 1) review literature on life history characteristics of commonly used shrubs and compare these characteristics to white spruce, one of the primary species for which seed zones in Alberta were developed; 2) provide an estimate of the current use of shrubs for re-vegetation in Alberta's boreal region; and 3) summarise the business case and methodology for developing a seed zone map for shrubs in Alberta.

Description

Short-horned lizards occupy a number of relatively isolated, widely scattered localities within southeastern Alberta. Populations of these small, well-camouflaged lizards are generally of low density and overall abundance in the province, as the area represents the northernmost margin of the species’ range. The objectives of this year's survey were to search all historically recorded locations for the species in the province, to evaluate the probability of continued persistence, given the habitat currently available, and to determine the continued presence of the species by captures where possible. Over the course of the survey, 125 individual lizards were captured. Within those sites found to be occupied by lizards, the average density of captures was also calculated to be approximately two animals per hectare, although southern sites were more generally populous than northern sites.

The volunteer citizens' lake monitoring program was conceived in response to concerns expressed by lakeshore property owners that the water quality of their lake was deteriorating. The samples collected by volunteer citizens provide background information that can be used to assess future impacts, enhance existing database on lakes and reservoirs, and assess seasonal trends in algal populations.

Crawling Valley Reservoir is an off-stream storage reservoir within the Eastern Irrigation District. The reservoir was built primarily to provide water for irrigation but it was also intended for recreation and fisheries. The reservoir was filled by 1985, and the Environmental Quality Monitoring Branch conducted water quality studies in 1986 and 1989.
