Continuing care health service standards (CCHSS) are a legislated requirement of operators pursuant to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act. The standards set the minimum requirement that operators in the continuing care system must comply with in the provision of publicly-funded health care. The CCHSS direct requirements related to the provision of publicly-funded health care in the continuing care system, applying to operators providing facility-based care in continuing care homes as well as those providing home and community care.

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed supportive living operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating supportive living accommodations in Alberta. The standards direct operators of supportive living accommodations in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents.  The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all supportive living accommodations maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those accommodations. Operators of supportive living accommodations will also be able to provide assurances to residents, employees, the public and municipalities that their accommodations are operating in accordance with established accommodation standards.

Pursuant to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, adherence with the Accommodation Standards – Continuing Care Home is a mandated requirement for type A and B continuing care home (formerly long-term care and designated supportive living, respectively) operators in Alberta. The Accommodation Standards - Continuing Care Homes provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating type A and B continuing care homes. The accommodation standards establish the minimum standards of accommodation services, such as meals, building maintenance, security, and housekeeping, social or leisure activities, and resident and family involvement to promote safety, security, and quality of life for clients and residents.
