Description

The Upper Foothills Natural Subregion is within the Foothills Natural Region and is found elevationally below the subalpine and above the lower Foothills and montane subregions. The subregion occurs in a narrow band of strongly rolling to steep sloped hills along the foothills of the Rocky Mountain front ranges. The purpose of this guide is to assist with field identification of plant communities, provide ecologically sustainable stocking rates, and further define plant community types by their ecological attributes. This guide represents the analysis of 2264 plots described in the Upper Foothills Natural Subregion in which 106 plant communities are presented.

Plants are the primary producers on rangeland. Range plants cluster in communities. Effective range management requires that plant communities, vegetation types, pastures, and finally ranches, be operated as range ecosystems. A range ecosystem is a complex of living and non-living (biotic and abiotic) factors of an environment where everything is connected to everything else. It functions as a unit and anything that affects one part of the unit, such as by grazing, affects the whole complex.

Description

The Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program was initiated in 2005 to help address the shortage of information on population size and occurrence of most rare plants and lichens in Alberta. This information is needed to carry out provincial detailed status assessments of species. The idea behind the program was to train volunteer plant enthusiasts, "citizen scientists", from across the province to collect this information by searching for new locations and monitoring known sites of potentially at-risk plants and lichens. The program was designed to provide the training and support services needed to facilitate the collection of standardized data on rare plants by volunteers.

Western spiderwort, designated as Endangered in Alberta, is a plant found in the southeastern corner of Alberta, within the Grassland natural region. This study reports on the work done in 2007 and 2008 by the Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program to implement some of the recovery strategies outlined in the recovery plan for western spiderwort by collecting standardized population data and conducting invasive species management in western spiderwort habitat.

Large amounts of organic carbon are present in Alberta rangelands. One hectare of rangeland contains 50-200 tonnes of carbon in soil organic matter, 2-10 tonnes carbon in plant biomass and 1-2 tonnes carbon in litter. Total organic carbon levels in rangeland soils are considerably greater than the amount of carbon present in the atmosphere above these soils or exchanged with the atmosphere each year. Total organic carbon in the 7 million hectares of native pasture in Alberta is equivalent to about three times the current annual emissions of all greenhouse gases in Canada.

Alberta Sustainable and Resource Development initiated an inventory of small-flowered sand verbena and tiny cryptanthe in southern Alberta in July 2007, in order to obtain additional information on their populations, abundance and distribution. Priority areas for this survey included the Bow River populations, north of Medicine Hat, and near McNeill. Prioritization of these areas occurred because of the absence of other survey efforts covering these known populations of tiny cryptanthe and/or sand verbena.

Description

No rare plant species or special plant communities were observed during the spring rare vascular plant survey. Two potentially rare species observed along the Jarvis Lake Trails should be rechecked later in the season to determine to the species level. The level of confidence in locating rare plants is a function of the time spent searching, plus appropriate season. The late May 2007 rare plant survey was early for detection of rare plant species; most flowering plants were just emerging from the ground and early-flowering species such as willows were in some cases, not even out yet in leaf. None of the habitats encountered were considered unique or unusual, based on the literature review, expected and known element occurrences in the project area or region, plus professional judgement by the botanist conducting the rare plant survey. Recommended mitigation measures are indicated by site, in the aforementioned sections.

The Maintenance and Recovery Plan for Western Spiderwort in Alberta 2005-2010 was reviewed by the Endangered Species Conservation Committee in June 2005. The committee subsequently recommended to the Minister that the plan be approved as written, and implemented. On December 16, 2005, the Minister approved the recovery plan and directed the Department to work toward its effective implementation.
